Sriwhana Spong was born in New Zealand and currently lives and works in London. Of Indonesian descent her early works explored histories and culture through the lens of perceived otherness in regards to a Western exoticisation of the East. For Great Movements of Feeling she will present a video work titled This Creature (2016). In this work, she films from her vantage point walking around Hyde Park in London, while she touches various object and ruminates on the medieval female mystic Margery Kempe. Kempe wrote the first autobiography that explored her relationship with God and it she was deemed ‘hysterical’ by the church and twentieth century historians. The work delicately explores the senses close relationship to emotion and the political shaping and labeling of emotion.
